Color use

- [Instructor] Color is used to help accentuate data and emphasize information. In addition, color is also used to indicate progression, alert users of important information, and to group information. When accentuating data, it's best to limit the color palette to eliminate distractions from the information you want to highlight. Gray is often used to minimize information, so when a brighter color is used, there's more visual emphasis on the color. Let's take a look at an example for The New York Times. This graphic uses yellow to emphasize the increase of auto ads in the 2020 Superbowl compared to previous years. The single color draws just enough attention to underscore the main point. Progression can be indicated by using color changes in data ordered from light to dark. We can see this principle at work in this graph by CB Insights tracking startup investments.
