Grouping and organization

- Two key perception principles related to interface design are proximity and similarity. When applying these principles to our design we want to make sure we are visually conveying how elements of information are related to each other. Our goal is to highlight how elements relate without overwhelming the user. We want the design to support our user's tasks and help them achieve their goal. To accentuate relationships on the user interface we can manipulate position, size, shape, and the color of the elements. Let's take a look at a simple example of grouping from Xcode, a code editor used to build Mac apps. This screenshot shows grouping of icons on the top bar. These icons are positioned globally, indicating actions taken from here will affect the window. In this case, the layout.
