Incorporate illustrations

- Illustrations are helpful to communicate concepts visually. They are typically used in onboarding to describe content and for empty states. Similar to icons, illustrations represent the brand and reflect the company's style. Onboarding can be a daunting and confusing process for some products, and it can be difficult to communicate how to get through the experience. You can simplify the message by using supporting illustrations. When used in onboarding, illustrations can add an element of warmth, personality, fun and approachability to what might otherwise be a dull process. In this example from a Google product onboarding, the illustrations add an engaging feel to invite you to explore your timeline. You might consider an illustration over a photograph, because the idea you want to communicate might not be captured as easily through a photo, especially for complex processes.
