- In 2019 a 43 year old high school teacher tweeted a spreadsheet of teen vocabulary terms. This list went viral online because the vocabulary was so different than past generations used. This goes to show that words really do matter. This is especially true when you're doing research with different generations. The right wording can mean the difference between getting the data you need and complete nonsense. In a study about a year ago, I naively asked a Gen Z participant what triggered her to buy a product. She got super defensive and shot back, I wasn't triggered. It was only then that I realized that for her the word triggered had a negative connotation. She didn't realize that for people who were slightly older the question, what triggered that, was synonymous with, what prompted that.
