Inspiration and reference images

- [Narrator] As with most design projects, we'll be consulting inspiration and reference to inform our designs. So let's take a look at some of the images that the client has chosen to inspire us as well as reference. Now the first one I want to look at is inspiration. Now these are more mood based. And, as you can see, the client really wants to bring nature into the design. We have a lot of pictures here of the mountains. Now one of the things about the mountains is that there's a lot of contrast. So here we have the granite of the mountains contrasting with the lushness of the trees and the water. And here, again, we've got water against granite. Now this particular garden here tends to have all of those different elements, but we also want something a little bit more modern, which is kind of represented here by these house numbers. Now again, these are just reference images, we're not gonna use all of these, but these are just to inspire us. Now one of the things the client wants is really good light in the house. So one of the things we want to reference is the light coming down from the trees. So, for example, here we have Avenue of the Giants where we have giant trees and then the light comes down almost like from a cathedral or something like that. Here's another one with that light. And here's some architectural elements that reflect that sort of light from above. And we also want to bring nature into the house, but we also want the house to have a bit of warmth. So, again, things like this where we have nice, warm elements. A fireplace might be nice for this particular house. Now that we've kind of set the mood, let's go ahead and move on to the exterior as well as layout of the house. Now these are images of houses themselves that can inspire. Now one of the things is that the client does love nature, but they don't want a log cabin, they want a modern house. They want clean lines and simple forms. So if we take a look at some of this reference here, you can see that we have a lot of that. You'll notice there's a lot of glass here, again, to bring in the light. One of the things the client liked was simplification of standard form. So here we have a couple of houses with gable end roofs that are extremely simplified. We also like shed roofs and flat roofs a lot. Now one of the things that we zeroed in on pretty early was the idea of multiple structures that are connected as one house. Now, for example, this particular house is actually built out of shipping containers, but as you can see it's got separate wings that are connected, and we like that a lot. Here's another one that has multiple structures as one structure. There's a couple of houses we noticed that kind of combined some of the elements that we really liked, which was the simplification of forms as well as separate wings. And this serves to fill the client's need to have separate entertaining and living areas. So here is one more in that style. And again, you can see we have multiple structures that are actually one building. So we have all of this reference, and obviously these are a lot of different types of buildings, so we're not gonna be able to incorporate all of this into this design, but again, we just want to get a sense or a feel for the things that we want in this particular design. Now we can also go on to materials. Now the client wants a contrast in materials. So here we have wood, we have stone, we have metal, and if we can use a combination of these it will give the house a little bit more life and interest. Now this goes back to some of the inspiration where we have the mountains and granite against wood against water. And so that contrast is something that the client really wants. So again, you can see we have some common themes here. We have wood against more technical materials such as metal as well as stone. This one here is wood against stone. This one is wood against metal, and so on. So we want to have that kind of variation in materials. We don't want the house to be monolithic. Now finally, let's take a look at the interiors. Now we're not gonna get too deep into interiors for this particular course, but in later courses we will. So again, we've got a combination of wood against manufactured materials. We want a modern feel. And again, these are just inspirational images. They're not images that we'll actually use in the house, but things that kind of inspire us. And, as you can see, again there's kind of some common themes here. So, hopefully, this gives you a little bit of an idea as to where we want to go with this house.
