Model the existing kitchen

- [Narrator] We're going to build a massing model of the existing kitchen in this video. Open the Kitchen 1.skp file. Go to the camera menu and choose perspective or press j to toggle between parallel and perspective. Parallel projection is better for top view when you're drawing in the plan but once you move into 3D space perspective is more natural because objects that are further away get smaller, just like the way that our eyes work. Let's navigate in 3D space so that we can see the place where the kitchen is going to go here in the model and the sketch at the same time, about like this. Press l to use the line tool. Start drawing from the corner of the wall and draw over in the green direction, a line that is eight inches long, so type eight + enter, to account for this offset in the sketch. Then move over in the red direction and type 25 to account for the counter depth. Move over in the green direction and type 12 + enter and then 24 + enter and 34 + enter. Then draw a line that's along the red direction so that it snaps to this edge in the group and click a point back where you started and a surface will be generated. Press p and pull this up 36 inches, type 36 + enter. Press the space bar, triple click on any one of the faces to select all contiguous and press g to create a group. Click off to the side. Draw in a rectangle from this corner over, let's make is 30 inches wide so type 30 comma 25 + enter. That's a way that we can separate the two different coordinate axes, so 30 inches wide, 25 inches deep. Press p and pull this up and snap it to the top of the existing counter. Then pull this out a little bit to account for the stove sticking out a bit. I'm gonna zoom in there by rolling the mouse wheel, press l, and just eyeball a line along this edge and then press p and pull this up to account for the back of the stove. I'll press the space bar, triple click on the object, and press g, to turn it into a group. I'll press h or go to edit, hide, to hide the object temporarily. Now let's continue drawing the cabinets. Draw a line from the existing cabinet over 30 inches and then draw a line in the red direction, over here. Now be careful when you draw these lines because if you're off angle you'll get this kind of trapezoid. What you want is to make sure that it's red so that it's perpendicular. I'll press the space bar, select this edge, and I'll press the delete key on keyboard to get rid of that, that's an alternative to using the eraser tool. Now, over here, we have some dimensions given, so I'll draw a line here that's 29 + enter, another one in the red direction that's 36 + enter, and then I'll go ahead and complete the boundary being careful to make sure that this is green and I can snap there and there, and then I'll press p, pull this up, and snap it to the existing height of the counter. Press the space bar, triple click on the new counter, and press g to turn it into a group. Next we need to build an upper cabinet that wraps around here, so I'll press l for line, draw a line over and I want this to be in the middle here so I'm going to acquire a tracking point by hovering the cursor over the midpoint in this group and then I'm going to snap right here, when it says from point, and I'll just continue clicking points around the boundary and then I'll press p and pull that up. Let's pull it up two feet, press the space bar, triple click, press g to make it a group and now we need to move it up 18 inches, so press m and move it up in the blue direction, type 18. I'll press u to unhide the stove now. Next we need to address the refrigerator. Press r for rectangle, click back here, type 30 comma 30 + enter, press p and pull this up, snap it to the top of the upper cabinets. Press the space bar to go to the select tool, triple click on the fridge and press g to make it a group. Press l to draw a line, it's 30 inches over and then draw it this way 30 inches as well and you see that in the sketch here. It's 30 inches over and it's 30 inches wide. Now, this is 46 inches to here so I'm going to select this edge, press m for move, start moving it and press the option key to go into copy mode. Let's move it over, 46 + enter. Then I'll press r for rectangle and draw a rectangle. Press p, pull this up, snap it to the height of the existing counters. Now there's a bar that extends 14 inches, so we can model that by selecting this edge, press m for move, start moving it and press the option key to make a copy. Copy it down one point five inches in the blue direction, then press p, pull out the new surface 14 inches, press the space bar. Let's get rid of this edge, I'll select it and press the delete key and I'll triple click on this island and press g to make a group. Finally, we need to make this freestanding piece of furniture over here. Looks like it is 47 by 24, so I'm going to draw that off to the side here somewhere, with a rectangle, I'll type 47 comma 24 + enter and I will pull that up to the height of the counter. I'll triple click on that and press g to make it a group and it has to be offset nine inches from the door opening, so I need to navigate in here and then move this over from this corner to this corner and then I need to move it over in the red direction nine inches. This is actually a hutch that has an upper portion so I'm going to double click on the group to open it for editing, then I will draw a line across from the midpoint to the opposite midpoint, press p, pull that up, snap it to the top of the fridge. I can press y to close the group or alternatively I can double click outside of the group to close it. So there we have it, a massing model of the existing kitchen. Save your work as kitchen two.
