Understanding the springs

- [Instructor] Chapter three, we're going to make the springs, and the springs are all important to this lamp. They allow it to be able to be positioned and it's important that we make the spring in a certain way Okay, so I've shown three sort of typical positions of the lamp. This may be not so typical, but it just shows you the sort of configurations we can get this into. The lamp is hinged in lots of different places. It's also hinged there so it can move in this direction. It's hinged at this point which allows this arm to come down, and when it pulls that arm up it pulls the big spring When it moves backwards it pushes the big spring down. they tend to just sort of hang around that sort of area, that does a lot of the work on this. And so let's just look at a few configurations. So in this scene we're showing the lamp as we are going to make it. So 90 degree sort of crook at that point, and then this positioned and the large spring tucked in to this sort of spring retaining clip at the bottom. Then we've got another position which shows these things pulled back a bit, and the large spring pulled up a bit, but we've still got the 90 degree sort of angle at that point. And then in Scene 3, we've got the top arm no longer in a 90 degree position, and that's pushing this back down, and that's pushing this back down, and that pushes the spring down as well. and that pushes the spring down as well. So these lower springs are now moved forward. So these lower springs are now moved forward. So it's essential that when we make these things, we allow that flexibility for the extension of the spring. we allow that flexibility for the extension of the spring. It's just a case of stretching out or reducing down this bit in the middle, or reducing down this bit in the middle, and also it's really important and also it's really important to put those little guidelines, stump lines in, to put those little guidelines, stump lines in, to make sure that we can position things quickly and rotate things accurately as well. and rotate things accurately as well. So that's all we're going to be up to in this chapter. So that's all we're going to be up to in this chapter. We're just going to mate these springs and the retaining clip, and then we can really start putting these things together, and make sure we haven't missed anything out.
