- [Instructor] Once we have the basic concept in place, we can start designing in 3D. Now 3D has a number of advantages. It can give you accurate volume, space, and form. It easily allows you to visualize light and shadow. It also allows for interactivity, walk-throughs, virtual reality. And then finally, we can also take our designs and move them into more complex BIM and CAD systems. You know, when you work in 3D, it is typically an additive process. We generally start simple with a massing pass just to block out the structure. Then we add details. We refine and do another iteration. Now the massing pass is basically just a low detail form of the structure. This allows us to make quick changes to the global shape and size of the building. It also allows us to quickly understand light and shadow, and also how that structure fits into the environment. Now, when we add detail, typically we'll start with exterior walls, we'll move on to the roof line. Then we'll go inside, we'll do some…
