Balancing the song and the style

- So, more often than not, as we're writing a song the style and the production approach kind of evolve as part of the writing process. So really, it has everything to do with the intention that we have, going into writing a song and then how we decide to color it in once we start to produce it and fill it in. But most of the time, it's the song that determines the production style. So, a couple of years back, I was in the lobby of a San Francisco hotel with a couple of songwriting friends, and there was a grand piano in the lobby. And we sat down at the grand piano and wrote a song. It was really fun, because what we were doing essentially is taking a private practice and making it public. It was a little bit like streaking. One of the things that I think about a lot is what it means when you say a song is good. I feel like songwriting is such a subjective medium that I don't really use terms like good and bad.
