Blurring a layer
- The best way to show depth of field is to blur a layer. I'm going to be working on shot 42 in scene one. You can see it here over on the left. We have our numbering set to live action, so you can join us there. If you've got a character that's really close to the camera and another far in the distance, like you see in this example here, you can emphasize how far apart they are by blurring one of them. Directors often ask board artists to blur a part of the board, so that it will look closer to what he wants his camera to see. A director will often say, "Alright, we're shooting this with a wide lens." Here's something important for you to know. A wide lens is like a wide angle lens that you would have on your camera. A long lens is a telephoto. That should be easy enough to remember. A wide angle lens has a very short depth of field, which means just a small area of the image is going to stay in focus.
