The purpose of storyboarding

- Every production, whether it's a commercial, TV show, or feature film, is the result of a talented crew following the directions of a director. The trick is how to get a crew of anywhere from 10 to over 200 people to see and understand the vision of the director. Everyone who reads a script will have a different image in their head of how the finished production could look, and that's where storyboards come in. Storyboards are the visual representation of the director's vision for the crew to follow so everyone works towards a singular vision. The storyboard artist's job is to get inside the head of the director and translate it for the crew. The director also uses his or her time with the story artist to work out various options for each important scene, stunt, or special effect. It's especially helpful for the director to be able to see animatics as they work, because animatics are video storyboards, and usually with some audio.
