What is MDL?

- [Narrator] In this chapter, we're going to be taking a look at the MDL functionality that can be found in Substance Designer by considering how we might go about creating a basic material using the tools available. Before we tackle that project, however, it would probably be good if we just quickly clarified exactly what MDL is. Well the letters stand for Material Definition Language, which is a programming language that can be used to create physically accurate material shaders for applications that support the MDL standard. Developed by NVIDIA, MDL materials can be used in most applications that make use of the Iray, and now-defunct Mental Ray render engines, along with any third party renderers that also support it, such as V-Ray for instance. The language has been designed to provide a relatively easy way in which developers can tell a material exactly how it is supposed to handle surface and light interaction, such as diffuse reflectance levels, specular reflections, metal, and…
