Creating joins
- Let's look at how to combine data using joins. So, first of all, we need to connect some data, and I'm going to use an Excel file, which you'll find in your data directory, called Spielberg Ratings. Now this data contains both audience scores and critic scores of the Steven Spielberg films. I'll combine both these together into a single data source. First thing is, I need to put in both the audience score and the critic score. So, I can't union these together because they're two different data sources. I need to combine them using a join. To do that, I can drag the critic score data over top of the audience score and over the join icon. So now, we can see the results of the join. So, first thing Tableau does is it has to pick one of the fields to try to do the join on. In this case, it's done year, and it's managed to join everything together. However, that's not quite the way that I wanted to join the data. I've got scores for each individual film, so I want to actually join it on…
