- [Man] The main aim of data visualization is to convey as much information as possible. So the last thing we need is anything that's going to distract from and generally we call that chart junk. This is all about the data ink ratio. This is a term developed by Edward Tufte and basically the data ink ratio is the comparison between the amount of ink being used to display the data divided by the total amount of ink used in the visualization. Now the reason that this is important is space is very precious in our dashboard. We need to make sure that every element contributes to that dashboard. Anything that doesn't is not aiding our understanding so we need to get rid of it. So anything that doesn't enhance the data or if it doesn't add to the design, then it doesn't belong on the dashboard.
