How to craft a powerful profile

- [Instructor] Are people able to recognize your business on Twitter? Crafting a powerful profile is really important in developing trust and recognition for your business. Let's go over the different elements in your Twitter profile. The first element is your name and username. This is going to be your primary identifier on Twitter. Next is the bio. That's your snippet of information where you describe who you are and what you do. Then there's the location. This is really important, especially for any brick-and-mortar businesses that have a physical location. Next is your website. You have the ability to share your website, your blog, your portfolio, your LinkedIn profile, anything that you want, that's a webpage all on your Twitter profile. Next you have your own profile picture. This is going to be a really important visual representation of you and your business. And it's also considered your avatar. Then finally, we have your header image. This takes up a lot of real estate on your Twitter account. So you're going to want to make sure that it represents your brand and also catches people's attention. Let's take a look at these elements in action. Here I am on the Topsy Turvy Cake account. This is a fictional account I'll be using for this example. First, let's take a quick look at the name and username that we discussed. You've two types of name identifiers on Twitter, your name and your username. The username is represented with the @ symbol. So the name is Topsy Turvy Cakes and the username is @TopsyCakeDesign. You'll notice that those show up right below the Topsy Turvy Cake avatar. Your username has to be unique but your name doesn't. The username is going to represent you on Twitter and no one else will have that same handle. Keep the name you choose simple and consistent with your brand. If someone else already claimed it, you can get creative. You don't need to stress too much about your name as you do have an option to add the bio. And I really suggest taking some time to craft the perfect one. In just a couple of sentences, you have to clearly state who you are and what you do. And that is definitely harder than it sounds. Use this as an opportunity to be very clear on your business and what you offer. Also, bios are really to edit so feel free to change it up and keep it fresh. Here for Topsy, you can see that she shares who she is and what she does. So, I bake award winning cakes, winner of the Baker of the Year, semi-finalist in the Great Bake-Off, now accepting orders, #bakeroftheyear. This is a really punchy bio. Now below that, we have the location indicator. Because Topsy Turvy Cake Design is a brick-and-mortar bakery, she'll list that the location is New Haven, Connecticut. To the right is where she's going to share her website that leads people directly to the cake portfolio. There is a birthdate, that could also be the origin date of your business. And then there's also a little calendar of when this account has joined Twitter. Now, to take a closer look at the profile picture, one thing to remember is that people connect with people more than they do with brands. So if it does make sense for you to be in the profile picture, I highly recommend it. When you do use a picture of yourself, ensure it's high quality and professional. In this example, you can see the image of the owner, Audry Topsy. And this is a great photo. She looks friendly and you can tell who owns this account. One thing to note is it doesn't matter what shape image you upload, Twitter's always going to change it to a circular shape. So this might change the images that you choose. Make sure the image that you upload looks great in a circular shape. Next is the header. The header photo is 1,500 by 500 pixels and that's kind of a weird size. I would recommend getting something specifically designed by a graphic designer or leveraging your Photoshop skills for this header image. You can also use a service like canva.com. In order to edit your account, you're simply going to choose Edit Profile. And here it's going to take you through all the different options, and that's how easy it is to update and keep your profile fresh. Now, it's your turn. Head over to your own Twitter profile. Make sure that when you look at it, you're viewing it from the eyes of your audience. How does your avatar look? Is there something you can add to your bio to better catch people's attention? Always double-check the links that you include in your account work. These are little details that are going to go a long way.
