- [Instructor] One of the things that it is good to get to grips with pretty early on when doing visualization work in Unreal is the fact that having to create, set up, and then tweak its own standard material can be a time-consuming process in more ways than one. So much so that to help speed things up wherever possible and to help streamline the process of material usage, the team at Epic Games have produced a special material type in Unreal called a material instance, which essentially gives users a way to create a single material in Unreal, referred to as the parent material, and then use that as the base from which a wide variety of very different-looking material types can quickly be created.
