What you should know

- [Instructor] Unreal Engine 4. You might as well get used to me saying that because you're going to hear those words a lot. When learning any new software, such as Unreal Engine 4, it's always nice to build on any experience you may have in other areas. Here are some of the topics that may help you along the way. Experience with navigating around 3D software is very helpful, and so any of these tools should prepare you well. 3ds Max, Maya, Blender, Rhino, Revit, or SketchUp, and there are more tools like this coming out all the time. We'll also be using a variety of file formats in this course, so knowing what software produces which format can go a long way. And of course, any experience creating digital content, be it images, 3D models, CAD, or video, it all helps. That said, this course starts from the basics, and includes some great example content. So you should be able to work with what we provide. However, there are some things you need in order to follow along. First and foremost, you need Unreal Engine 4. You can get it for free through the Epic Launcher which is the next requirement on our list. You'll use this portal to download and manage your Unreal Engine versions, as well as download example content and interact with the community. In order to load the CAD files in this course, you'll need Unreal Studio. You can find this plugin in the library section of the launcher, just below your project list. The Substance plugin is also required for the course material. You can find it for free in the Epic Launcher Marketplace. And you'll need a 3D editor of some kind, such as Blender or 3ds Max, which is what I'll be using. And finally, Visual Studio with the C++ expansion. You'll need this to properly build and package your project at the end. Everything you need to get the most out of this course is either free or included in the exercise files, and I'll be there every step of the way. So there's really nothing stopping you from diving in. Let's make something unreal together.
