>> We've spent a lot of time talking about how music can help us shape the audience's reactions to your story. Now, it's time to talk about the other major aspect of your sound track, sound design. In other words, everything that's not music. All of the points in determining an effective music track for your film are the same for an effective soundscape. You need to know your log line, have an analysis of your scene, and know your lean-forward moments. Since sound needs to support your story as much as music does, it's important to know your story. On most films, I'm doing some minimal sound work as I picture-edit the film. I'm doing this for two reasons. First I have ideas on how sound can support the story. Even if I'm not going to be doing the final sound editing work, my basic sound editing will help guide the sound editors to the type of shape that I want. And second, because sound is a major component of story telling, I want any audience that sees the film during my editing…
