- OK, so we just talked all about the incredible advancements in film and film editing that took place from about 1915 to 1925. It was an exciting age when film language was being invented and analyzed and tweaked and changed and made available as the building blocks for filmmakers and editors to build upon and expand upon to create the future of film. It was definitely a very exciting time to be making and watching films. And we'll definitely be discussing how film language and editing approaches changed even more throughout the 20th century. But first, I want to talk about something very important. And that is sound. Through the early history of cinema, as we know, films were shot without film. Often musical soundtracks were designed separately for films, and sometimes live musicians accompanied films in the theater. But the practice of synchronized sound, specifically dialogue, was difficult early on, mostly due to the inability to accurately synchronize picture to sound, as well…
