Controlling contrast
Contrast can be described as the difference in light between parts of an image. By controlling contrast, we can make a fairly common subject, in this case an executive giving an interview, look drastically different. To make this exercise even more interesting, we decided not to move the cameras or subject, and instead move our light, manipulating the foreground, midground, and background. Increasing or decreasing the contrast in making our subject more three dimensional. We used only one LED light, set up 3,800 Kelvin, to match the office overhead lights. We moved the light into three different positions. The first position is a green light. This very dramatic approach helped separate the subject from the background. The second position is a side light. This is a great approach that allowed us to emphasize texture, add depth and extract a lot of character from the subject. The third position is the frontal light.
