For this movie we filmed the chef preparing some food in a commercial kitchen. The scene was not about the kitchen or even a cooking technique. It is part of a short film about a chef working at a school and changing the eating habits of hundreds of children and their families. The shot needed to establish him as the main character and not just another element in the kitchen. For the first shot, we had only the kitchen safety lights on. Everything looked flat, dark, and boring. Also as expected, the available lights weren't providing enough light for a proper exposure. Even if we turned all the kitchen lights on, including the stove's overhead light, which we wanted to use as our practical light, the chef's face was lost in the background. One option was to flood the room with light. This is how it looked. It definitely fills in all the shadows and helps with the exposure.
