Know the story you need to tell

First, we need to truly understand the story we're trying to tell before we settle on a specific lighting scheme. Brightness, color temperature, contrast, and the quality of light play a fundamental part in the way we communicate our visual stories. Are long contrasting shadows a better match than a flatter shadowless one? Are we attempting to accurately recreate certain hues, or extreme and unnatural colors, to better represent our story's location or moods? Through lighting design, we can evoke assumptions and emotional reactions from the viewers. Remember our chef working in a commercial kitchen? When we wanted to make the the space the center of attention, we chose a high key approach, and flooded the kitchen with light. Conversely, when we wanted to guide the viewer's attention to the chef's face, we went with a low key approach, made the room a lot darker, and visually separated the chef from the background.
