Working with natural light for interior scenes

Before pulling out all your lights on a set, you should always assess if you're going to incorporate any available light. If possible, it is ideal to use or modify the existing light as opposed to imposing a preconceived lighting setup. For this scene, we were interviewing a chef in a cafeteria. We noticed that one side of the room was lined with large windows, allowing a lot of direct sunlight to spill through. We positioned the chef so that he was side lit by the windows. At this point, we knew we had enough natural light to work with, but it was a bit too strong, too directional, and it was blowing out the right side of the chef's face. From a technical standpoint, this exposure was not acceptable. We needed to knock it down. We set up a screen and positioned it in front of the windows to diffuse the light, reduce the contrast, and overall make the scene more flattering. Let's compare these two approaches side by side.
