- [Instructor] Every element and layer, in After Effects is effectively a smart object, if we use Photoshop terminology. In fact the term doesn't exist in After Effects because everything is a smart object. What that means, is we cannot change any source file imported into After Effects by any edit that we make to it. That includes not only every effect, every paint stroke, every pen selection that we do to it, but really anything we do to it. Now to emphasize this, I'm going to go into the project here and actually delete the background from this composition. And I get a warning and it's gone, right? And I'll save the project. Now let's look at the Photoshop source in Photoshop and the background is still there. And in fact, I could either reimport it, or I could simply undo and we are back to where we were.
