- Air traffic controllers are people who work in control towers and other places that relate to air traffic. It is these people's job to make maintain the safety of the airspace that they have been assigned to. UAV pilots do not need to communicate with ATC, but it is a good idea to listen to their communications with manned aircraft. Here are some examples of how some ground facilities are addressed. When communicating with untowered airports radio transmissions should have the following format. Who they are calling, who they are, where they are, which is position and altitude, what they want to do, unless you are just advising traffic of your position, and who they are calling.
