Approximating believable realities

- [Instructor] When creating visual effects, you're essentially trying to get viewers to believe that a camera captured something that it actually didn't. In order to make that believable to an audience, you have to simulate what looks realistic, and part of that is understanding natural phenomena. But another aspect of this that I have learned the hard way over the years is that sometimes, photorealism is overrated. I mean, you want your visual effects to look believable and realistic, but sometimes, life doesn't look realistic. Let me show you what I mean. Mount Rainier in Washington state often has this weird halo of clouds on the top of it. (laughs) It kind of looks like a cloud hat. Now, typically, you don't see clouds look like this, so these clouds might look silly to a lot of people in the audience watching your visual effects that aren't familiar with this phenomenon.
