- As we know, after our location scout and our onsite planning, we decided to have Hayden ascend the stairs as he speaks. Because the theme of the memoir is leaving a dark past behind and going toward a hopeful future, we thought this would be a great way to metaphorically show this, for a number of reasons. First, simply moving from a lower to a higher position is a very clear way to display the sentiment. Another powerful way to show this in film form is to begin with Hayden far away, thereby taking up a very small part of the video frame. Psychologically, extreme long shots show the subject with a sense of seclusion, loneliness or insignificance. Then as he ascends we end up with Hayden in close up, taking up nearly the entire frame. Again, psychologically close up shots enhance emotion and show power. So as he takes power over his situation we see this reflected visually. And of course in terms if lighting it would be great if we could design our lighting scheme so that he begins…
