- Now that you know who is on a typical production crew, the roles that they play, and the gear that they use to do their jobs, let's talk about budgets. I want to give you an overview of what's typical in a crew budget, and then also talk about some strategies for avoiding going over budget or not having sufficient budget to do the job. If you're getting bids from different crews, you'll want to be sure your comparing apples to apples. So some of the items you want to look for in a typical budget include how many hours are included in a day rate? Is there a rate for travel or getting door to door beyond that day rate? What camera gear is included? What sound gear is included? There's a wide range of crew day rates from region to region as well as depending on the type of camera equipment, the experience of the team, the proximity to your shoot location, and many more variables.
