- Humor offers so many real benefits. It's not funny to say that our species could not survive without laughter. Both the jokester and her audience benefit from comedy, physically, spiritually, emotionally and even intellectually. And it's not just human beings, other living things seem to enjoy a good laugh as well. Chickens, for example, relish stories about why a person crossed the road. Because humor is so important, when you use it to make a point, people listen. The very first time someone got a laugh, it may have saved a life. Let's say a group of prehistoric hunter-gatherers were scouting for food when the leader slipped and fell down. The surprise made the others laugh but it also warned them that this was a treacherous spot in the path. Later, that same leader may have saved his own life when confronted with overwhelming numbers of hostile tribe. He falls down on purpose. The enemy warriors laugh and tension is relieved.
