- Roger Deakins says composition is the most critical part of a filmmaker's work, even more than lighting. And I couldn't agree more. Your composition can start very simple. For example, is this going to be symmetrical or not? left heavy or right heavy? we can then choose the most appropriate frame size from extreme wide shots to medium close ups and extreme closeups. And then we would need to consider the shot type, for example, low or high angle over the shoulder, Ariel, a single or group shots among many others. Viewers don't know what should be important in a frame. It is up to us to guide them and we do so by the way we frame our shots. If our goal is to establish a location and context for a scene, we might be better served by using extreme wide shots and not closeups, which are better suited to give the viewer a more intimate relationship with the subject.
