Collaboration verses control

- The happiness of your talent and getting a great performance from them is all about quality. It's the quality of your relationship as director with them, quality communication that is clear and concise, and remembering that the quality of the production is more important than your ego. When it's time for production, many directors have what I call a death grip on their artistic vision. I used to be that type of director. I used to think there was only one way a script could be done, only one way a scene could go, or one way that I saw in my head that a character could be delivered, but I found out that I was wrong. In reality, there's a lot of ways that all of these things can come to light because of the ideas others bring to your production and you need to invite that in. You need to let go of the illusion of control. It is, in fact, a myth. You can threaten other people, but you can never actually control them, nor should you want to.
