- Okay, your footage is in the can. You may be tempted to think the most important part of the job is finished, don't think that. As far as I'm concerned, the most important part, especially for comedy, is editing. Why is editing so important? Because the heart of comedy is timing. If all or most of your video is in one continuous shot, the timing is in the hands of the performers. But the moment you cut to a different angle, whoever's editing has more power than anyone else on the crew. It's all in the time that passes between one angle the next and it's as delicate as a heart operation. A frame of video footage is roughly 1/24th of a second long and as little as three frames can make the difference between a punchline that works and one that falls flat. Comedy occurs mostly in the subconscious, which works really quickly. Make your viewer wait too long and her mind is on to other things. Sloppy editing can confuse the viewer.
