- Let's take a quick look at the technical aspects of compressing a video file. Now I'm going to focus on computer playback at first, but you can use these tools for other outlets as well. On the PC side, there are many compression tools available. QuickTime Pro is available from Apple, and it'll allow you additional methods of optimizing movies. This is a purchase. Sorenson Squeeze has been around for a very long time. Cinematize is optimal for pulling things off of a DVD, as is MPEG Streamclip, although both tools can be used to repurpose content from other formats. Adobe Media Encoder is included with an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription, and tools like Episode and Episode Pro from Telestream offer robust workflows and automation for high-end broadcasters. On the Mac side, we have similar tools. QuickTime Pro is available, although may not run depending upon your version of Mac OS.
