Creating an advanced depth matte for footage

- In order to use a Gradient Map on Footage, you'll need After Effects but you're going to want to start in Photoshop where you build the gradient map. This gradient map or depth mat is going to be useful to determine what's in focus and what's out of focus. To start, open up your video clip. You could bring it directly into Photoshop or in this case, as I'm doing here, use a media player and just choose edit, copy. That'll copy the frame that you're parked on. Inside of Photoshop here, I'll make a new document and paste the contents of my clipboard. What I now want to do is define the areas that are going to be in and out of focus. I want these dishes here to be in focus but I want the area further away, out of focus. Well, let's start by making some selections. We'll take the Object Selection tool here and lasso around these dishes. And it did a good job of selecting 'em. I'll make a new empty layer and fill those…
