Creating a depth matte with gradients

- Sometimes when working with a picture, you'd like it to fall off gradually, so that you have a clear area of focus. This can be done with the lens blur and a gradient. I also suggest the use of a vignette. Let me show you. Let's start here with a simple example. In this case, we have a clear area of focus on the stairs, but things that fall away need to disappear. Well, what I want to do is create a gradient, but I also need that gradient to take in mind the opening here. So let's start with a basic selection. I'll try using the object selection tool first and just click on the doorway here, and it did a great job of selecting the doorway. Now, what we can do under channels here is click to save that as an alpha channel, and you see that it created the initial area. Now, with that selection still made, what I want to do is do a gradual blend from white to gray. So I'll select my alpha channel and press G for…
