Creating a shallow depth of field

- Cinematographers frequently throw around the term depth of field. The depth of field is basically the range of stuff that's in focus in the shot. One of the most common cinematic effects in existence is to create a very shallow depth of field, or in other words, to have only a sliver of the shot in focus. Because our eyes are naturally drawn to things that are in focus, this is a great tool for visual storytelling. It's also a very natural effect 'cause this is similar to the way our eyes work. When you have an object close to your face and you're focusing on it, objects in the background become blurry, and when you focus on an object in the distance, objects close to you become blurry. And you know, it's honestly just a gorgeous effect. Highlights that get all blossomy, they get bigger when they go out of focus. The results are just magical.
