- In the next couple of chapters, we're going to look at some imperfect shots and figure out how to improve them. In the next chapter, we'll recreate a shot from The Assurance that didn't turn out like I envisioned. And in this chapter, we're going to take a very typical indie shot of a character in front of a plain old white wall and figure out how to make it interesting, step by step. And everything that we're doing here is extremely inexpensive and something you can do on almost any set, regardless of budget or location. The first thing that we need to do is critically evaluate our shot. This is a shot typical in dozens of indie and student films that I've seen over the years, just a character close-up in front of a white wall. This is so mercilessly boring. We do want a character close-up, and this is the location we have to use. But what is off about this shot?
