Deciding light motivation

- Anytime we set up a shot, we have to decide where the lights are coming from, and what's creating that light source. In other words, we have to kind of figure out the story of why light is being emitted. For example, in our big council scene, we had our big key light coming from this side. The reasoning behind this is that this is where we thought the opening to the tent would be letting in daylight. So, in the language of cinematography, we would say that this imaginary tent opening is the motivation for the lighting. For the hut scene, we supplemented the light in the doorways to create a more beautiful shot. So, we would say that the motivation for the fluorescent light we put in the shot was the open doorway. So when we cut from a wider shot, that just use natural light, to this shot, that use the key note flow, it makes sense to the audience. That light has a reason for being there.
