Diffusion types

- Our main tool for softening the sun, is a semi-translucent fabric referred to as a silk or diffusion. These fabrics, when used in front of a light source, softens it, making it very pleasing on the face of your subject. In general, I like to use soft light when I'm shooting an interview. It makes people look so much better. They come in stops, like half, three quarter, and one stop. The higher the stops, the greater the diffusion. I tend to use the three quarter a lot. It's a nice balance of softness without knocking the exposure down too much. This is a little tricky, so it's best to have a couple different stops available, since the sun isn't the same strength every day. To use these diffusion fabrics, we need a way to mount them and yes, we have several options. Let's start small and build up. These are my favorite Matthews RoadRags.
