Do deepfake videos have beneficial uses too?
- Deepfake technology isn't just about danger, doom and gloom. It can be a powerful tool in the film industry, helping to tell stories in ways never before possible. Deepfakes can let filmmakers insert a character into a film that would have otherwise been impossible. This could be for logistical reasons like if an actor was unavailable or incapacitated, or even because the actor had passed away. At the time I'm recording this course, this type of character replacement effect work has primarily been accomplished through high-end CGI, as highly credible deepfake technology is still relatively new. For example, in the 2019 film "The Irishman," high-end CGI technology was responsible for de-aging 70-something Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci, Al Pacino, and other older actors showing the characters gradually growing older over a span of four decades.
