- A great way to streamline our workflow is by using external monitor recorders. Here's why. We can actually see the audio levels and adjust them accordingly, and because I'm recording clean sound that is embedded into the footage, it's going to make my life so much easier in post, not only by syncing the two cameras, but I'm going to have a backup of sound automatically. But wait, there are a few more reasons why we would like to use external monitor recorders on our one person crew productions. A reference monitor becomes a way to control the camera remotely. It is much easier to frame and check the sharpness in a larger screen, especially when working with gimbals. When shooting log, it is critical to use a waveform monitor, which some cameras don't have, and even if they do, it's much easier to do it on a larger monitor.
