- Alright, let's talk about fluorescent lights. Fluorescent lights are low-pressure, mercury vapor gas discharge lamps that use florescence to produce visible light. An electric current in the gas excites mercury vapor, which produces short-wave ultraviolet light that can cause a phosphor coating on the inside of the lamp to glow. Wow, right? (laughs) If you look in the ceiling of most office buildings, you will see fluorescent lighting. This has been a staple for lighting in buildings for a long time. You probably have some in your garage or kitchen too. Because of the soft and bright nature of the fluorescent tubes, they work great for lighting spaces. LED is taking over, but fluorescent fixtures are still very popular, and a great option on the used market if your budget is tight. They work great for soft lighting situations, like interviews, or lighting green screens evenly, due to its broad size.
