How can gimbals help stabilize shots?

- Hi, my name's Rich Harrington. - And I'm Robbie Carmen. - And this week we're going to be talking about how you can get a steady shot with a moving camera. Now, there are of course many traditional solutions using a dolly, or putting it on a moving vehicle or a slider. - [Robbie] Or a crane, something like that, yeah. - Yeah but we're going to talk about something that's really gotten popular lately, and that's the use of gimbals. You can have larger gimbals like this one, or smaller ones like this with built in cameras or even use an iPhone or a GoPro on it. So this is really something that's changing the way people do productions. Rob, you work on a lot of broadcast TV. - Yeah. - You're seeing these all the time, aren't ya? - It's unbelievable I mean I think one of the things that the idea of working with an affordable gimbal provides you is creative freedom. We're so used to, oh you know, put the camera on, on a set of sticks. - Yeah. On a tripod, and maybe move it a little bit. Having gimbals in the various sizes that they come in allow you to move with your subjects and get more creative shots while also avoiding a plague that is camera shake, right? And that's the whole thing that a gimbal allows you to do. It allows you to move while also keeping your video nice and steady and not be distracting with a lot of camera shake and movement. - So when we come back we'll talk about some of the features in larger gimbals that you might look for, whether you're buying or renting. And then we'll go on to talk about some of the more affordable budget ones.
