- Words are very important, but only 20% of communication is the actual words that you use. It's not always what you say, but instead, the way that you say it. The details make someone care, but the tone, cadence and intonation create intrigue and grab attention. All of these things will make you seem more confident, likable, and knowledgeable. Listen to these next two sentences. They use the same words, in the same order, but have a different affect. I saw a cute, fluffy dog at the park. I saw a cute, fluffy dog at the park. The sentence was the same, but which was more enjoyable? When you modulate your voice, it's easier to listen to, and to comprehend. It helps maintain attention. This is one of the reasons that people speak to babies in cutesy little voices. It's seemingly innate, but what it does is capture the attention of a person's subject.
