Paying your crew

- The best way to ruin your reputation in the production community is failing to pay your crew. Look, you hired them. They did the work. Now pay them. You should have the money to pay your crew before you start filming. For me, there's no other way to work. Typically, my billing is broken up into thirds. 1/3 to start the project, 1/3 or the full amount to pay for filming, and then the final payment at the completion of post-production. So, I bill the client in advance for the amount of money necessary to pay my crew before we show up to do any filming. If payment is not received, well, I cancel the production day. Why do I do this? Well, some clients, especially corporate clients, may not pay me for 60 to 90 days. So, it's unfair to ask your crew to wait to get paid because you're waiting on payment. By having the money in advance, I can pay the crew as soon as they invoice me. Talk about building a great reputation. Putting the welfare of the crew first by paying them immediately…
