Perfecting the shot vs. Fixing it in post
- In the last movie, we looked at how we shot the assurance in such a way that we had some flexibility in post. But I should probably make it clear that most DPs don't like to shoot that way. They would probably consider this sloppy work. Personally, I approach cinematography as more of a producer-director. If it would take 20 minutes on set to make something perfect in camera, or if it would take 20 minutes to fix it in post, I would much rather fix it in post. Time on set is way more expensive, because of all the cast and crew, locations and so on. So something like setting up a flag to darken the edge of the frame, for example, is a common instance where it's much faster, and therefore, much less expensive, to darken it in post with an almost identical result. Now of course, not everything can be fixed in post. The shape of light can't be fixed in post. The angle of light can't be fixed in post. You need to learn what you can, and what you can't fix in post-production and how time…
