- Portable battery-powered LED lights have liberated us from always having to use AC power. In fact, all these lights in the frame right now, are running off batteries. LEDs have changed the way I shoot, for sure. In order to power a traditional light fixture in the field, you would need a gas-powered generator. (laughing) Yeah, I don't think I have room in my van for one of those. However, I do have room for lights like these. A good example of an on-camera light is the Felix LED light. It's a very bright, single-source LED. It has a cable to connect to a large broadcast-style battery. They last about an hour on full power. Another high-output LED is this CAME-TV LED Bolsen. It uses smaller Sony NP style batteries. These lights cost around $200 - $500. These small LED panels are very compact, and easy to use. The fixture, when plugged in, also charges the battery. I love this option. You can get lights in remote settings, like outdoors, in the shade, or a section of a building that…
