Pre-shooting
- Very few people consider pre-shooting a project because it seems like a waste of time. But actually, when working as a one person crew, pre-shooting can save you a lot of time during the actual production and post. Here's what I do and I highly recommend. Forget for a moment about cameras, and lights, mics, sets, wardrobe, everything. Just grab a smartphone or a tablet and shoot your script or shot list. If you have actors or props that are very important to the scene, and they are available, use them. Otherwise use pillows, or boxes, or mannequins. Be creative. Here's a recent example. I was on assignment in Mexico documenting artisans and one of the subjects didn't show up. The friend of a friend of a friend used someone who works with alebrijes, the brightly colored Mexican sculptures of fantastical creatures.
