- Ah, the legal stuff. Let's start with the obvious. I am not an attorney so I'm not giving you legal advice. But my rule of thumb is super simple. If I didn't create it I don't own it, and therefore I need written permission to use it. There are several legal forms that we need to consider before a shoot starts. This include the people in front of the camera and the people collaborating on your projects. It also includes artwork, music, graphics, logos, and even places. This is called property releases, believe it or not. When it comes to copyright there are three main kinds. One is Creative Commons which are free to use. A good example are images from NASA or sound effects from the BBC. The second group are free to use which include public spaces or household products. And the third group is fair use.
