Professional vs. amateur lighting

- Great lighting is like a supporting actor to your project. Without it, it kind of falls off the map. Bad lighting can show up in a project and completely distract the viewer away from the message. Making your talent, whoever they are, male, female, old, or young, looking their best is your top priority as a videographer. The last thing you want to do is distract the audience when the most critical thing is the message. Common mistakes I see are that the light's too harsh, or it's in the wrong position. So to avoid those harsh shadows on the nose, under the eyes, on the chin, we're going to use soft lighting. Soft lighting is when you take a light source that might be a narrow beam, a hard light, and you expand it, you make it bigger. And by doing that, by making it bigger, you're actually introducing a lot of wrap. That wrap allows skin tones, wrinkles, other things to actually carry less light.
